Description:
Lambert solves a geometrical
problem, viz. to reconstruct the course of a ship at sea on the basis
of observations with a plane table on the shore. The problem is
originally in Marinoni's De Re Ichnographica (1751),
which Lambert read early on (1752). Lambert here reduces this problem
(the most complicated one in Marinoni) using algebraic methods. Since
many observations have to be reduced to solve the problem, these
studies constitute one of the starting points for Lambert's work on the
theory of errors.
